FSAE Italy 2024 – Let’s recap

FSAE Italy 2024

FSAE Italy 2024: where innovation meets competition

From September 4th to 8th, the FSAE Italy 2024 competition brought 1,600 engineering students from 17 countries to the Varano de’ Melegari Circuit.

It is a prestigious student design competition organized by SAE International, challenging university engineering teams to design, build, and race a formula-style car.

This event serves as an educational experience, where teams learn the dynamics of teamwork, including rules, deadlines, and the construction and design phases of their prototypes. The competition emphasizes engineering knowledge, commitment, organization, and coordination in both the design and presentation of their product.

There are four participation classes: electric vehicles (1EV), combustion vehicles (1CV), driverless vehicles (1DV), and Class 3 (without a prototype).

The challenges are divided into two main categories

  • Static Events: teams present the design of their car, simulate pitching it to potential investors, and analyze the cost report of the materials and components used.
  • Dynamic Events: they focus on the car’s performance, including Acceleration, Skid Pad, Autocross, and the final Endurance event.

Below you can find the overall results for each class

  • Class 1CV – MoRe Modena Racing Hybrid (Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia)
  • Class 1DV – eForce Prague Formula (Czech Technical University in Prague)
  • Class 1EV – FS Team Tallinn (Tallinn TU/UAS)
  • Class 3 – UniBo Motorsport Hybrid (Università di Bologna)

Meccanica 42’s role

We have been participating in this event for years, but this year we took it a step further by becoming a sponsor of FSAE Italy 2024 and also by joining ANFIA.

Our team was fully involved, playing a pivotal role throughout the event:

  • several of our experts participated as judges and technical inspectors, mentoring students through both dynamic and static events
    • Francesco Ristori – Head of Formula Driverless Dynamics, supported by Alessio Anticaglia and Alessandro Manenti
    • Edoardo Levantino – Judge of the Business Presentation Event
    • our CEO, Claudio Annicchiarico Head of Formula Driverless
  • at our stand, our marketing team welcomed students, answering their questions about job opportunities and providing insights into our company.

“During this edition of Formula Student, we noticed an increase in the number and performance of driverless teams. Despite our years of attendance at the competition, it’s always thrilling to see the dedication these students put into the design and development of their vehicles.”

– Francesco Ristori, Head of Formula Driverless Dynamics

Speaking of autonomous driving

Beyond the competition, the event sparked important conversations about the autonomous driving.

In an interview with Messimo de Donato, our CEO had his say on this subject. The topics covered in the interview are many: from the increasingly advanced performance of participating teams, to technological and regulatory developments, to the challenges yet to be faced in autonomous driving, like the evolution of safety devices and the hurdles of high costs and societal acceptance.

We are deeply grateful to the teams, and to everyone who visited our stand and contributed to the success of FSAE Italy 2024.

We can’t wait to seeto see what the next edition will bring!
